PART IV

HANAFORD ADAPTIVE MOTORSPORTS & WELLNESS

(NEW HAMPSHIRE SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER PROJECT)
About us:
Hanaford Adaptive Motorsports & Wellness has developed a unique driver education system for the disabled that uses simulated and real-life driving experiences to instill independence, improve quality of life and rebuild lives.
Based on tested and proven medical rehabilitation technology, Hanaford's educational program takes individuals through a multi-level training program before putting them into a real driving experience in an adaptive vehicle specially fitted up for disabled drivers. The program's signature component is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to turn laps in an adaptive race car on a bona fide short track, for a groundbreaking experience that is thrilling, confidence building, and fun!
Our products and services:
Hanaford Adaptive Motorsports & Wellness delivers a quality driver training experience by working with individuals in safe, controlled environments that allow them to master skills at their own pace, boosting the likelihood of success. Hanaford offers two core products – video gaming and a unique driver education program. Both products incorporate the signature Hanaford-developed race car driving experience.
·         Driver Education and Training Program:
1.      Simulation: The VXP driving simulator is a key component of the Hanaford program. Using software tested and proven in rehabilitation hospitals, VXP introduces basic skills needed to regain confidence in a controlled environment, making for a safer, easier transition to real-life driving.
2.      Guided experience: Specialized educators guide participants through advanced level skills and introduce training vehicle, while implementing the Driver Skills Development Program found to reduce crash rates by fifty percent.
Racing: Our signature component allows participants the opportunity to drive an adaptive stock car on a short track. This is truly a life changing event for the drivers.
·         Consulting Services:
1.      Local program development: We assist with launching Hanaford approved programs, tapping into Hanaford's experience in program development, instructor training, and leveraging Hanaford's corporate relationships for sponsorships.
2.      Adaptive race car production: Full, from-the-ground-up package from building an adaptive race car to training personnel and obtaining insurance. Hanford’s will see you through every step.
·         Video Gaming: Using the VXP driving simulator powered by iRacing.com, the Hanaford Adaptive Motorsports & Wellness Challenge creates a competitive environment to encourage the disabled to build skills that will serve them in real life driving situations. Participants compete to qualify for the chance to drive a race car on a track and raise funds to have a Hanaford Race Day Event at a local facility.

Our clients:
Hanaford serves persons with disabilities including Spinal Chord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, Amputees, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Many of these customers are amongst the 3.5 million disabled military veterans currently living in the United States, and due to recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the age of the veteran population is decreasing—our product appeals particularly to those young veterans in the 18-35 age range, though older veterans can enjoy are service too.

There are currently more than 33 million disabled video gamers ready to experience our product.

·         More potential clients:
1.      Associations for the disabled and veterans
2.      Community based adapted sports programs and networks such as Disabled Sports USA
3.      VA hospitals such as Puget Sound VA in Seattle, WA; model rehabilitation hospitals such as Craig Hospital in Denver, CO, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, MA

The VA will pay for veterans to attend events with a recreation therapist if it can be justified as medically necessary as part of their therapy.  For example the VA will pay for veterans to compete in the wheelchair games. We are going to present to the voluntary services committee for funding to create an adaptive motor sports program

- Dr Heckman's scientific presentation at the International RESNA conference, Heckman said, "I don't think that the VA will endorse a community service organization (i.e. Accessible Racing), but again I'll work on a scientific paper to identify the benefits to the  Veterans. I have always felt that having the publication provides some scientific backing of the effect of the program,  current evidence validates the positive effect of this program in persons with disabilities." please review attached scientific paper & poster presentation at the International RESNA conference earlier this month in Seatle Wa

VXP driving simulator:
Rehabilitation of patients with neurological and physical disorders poses a significant challenge to the medical community. Current methodologies are reclusive in nature and require a significant time commitment for effective neurorehabilitation to occur. These treatment modalities are repetitious and tedious, making it difficult for the patient to sustain interest over long periods of time. This frequently leads to decreased motivation and participation with therapeutic treatments and limited compliance with home therapy regimens, which may adversely affect the potential functional outcome and level of functional independence that can be achieved.

The effective use of Virtual Reality and Simulation tools, offer a long term cutting edge alternative to prevalent treatment. Initial research studies in gross motor gesture analysis demonstrate a high correlation between virtual simulated tasks and functional daily life skill. For example, components of Wii™ boxing have been matched specifically to self feeding. These studies reveal that improvement in skill in the simulated task, although technically different, translates to improvement in the daily life task. This research also indicates a significant increase in active participation, motivation, and compliance with virtual reality and therapeutic simulation tasks leading to increased rate of recovery and return to independent living.

The Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist faces similar challenges. A client afflicted with Cerebral Palsy, for example, often requires 40 or more hours of one to one clinical and behind the wheel training and instruction. It is difficult to recruit family to assist with this extensive training due to a need for a dual braking system in the vehicle. Lengthy one to one training at an hourly rate is not cost effective for the private pay client and is often not reimbursed by Medicare or most insurance companies. The VXP™ partnered with Accessible Racing offers a low cost off the shelf solution to deliver “State of the Art” evaluation and treatment that can maximize resource utilization, decrease cost, increase revenue, and improve driving skill and function in a decreased length of time. It is a perfect adjunct to any Drivers Education or Rehabilitation Program.

The VXP™ utilizes an inexpensive off the shelf Logitech Force Feedback Racing Wheel that has been modified to allow adaptability and versatility during evaluation and training for individualized client needs and goals. It has capability to be equipped with a variety of hand control and steering devices to allow independent use for those with limited or impaired upper and lower extremity function. Various software programs are available that offer therapeutic simulation exercises to address a wide range of functional pre-driving skills including: reaction timing, visual processing time, eye hand coordination, proprioception/kinesthesia, dynamic sitting balance, gross and fine motor coordination/dexterity, multistep direction following, accident avoidance skills and other significant executive functioning skills.

As indicated in current research, simulation devices and activities like the VXP™ are engaging and fun. Clients display increased motivation and participation in the treatment and have significantly increased sustained attention to the task as opposed to conventional therapeutic methods. There is opportunity for the client to perform part of the training independently and for family and friends to participate. SD card technology allows the therapist or CDRS to track time, monitor progress and upgrade the home rehab program.

Virtual Reality and Therapeutic simulation modalities such as VXP™ are:

  • Engaging and fun
  • Improve client and clinician satisfaction
  • Increase motivation and compliance with home programs
  • Improve functional performance in daily life skills
  • Improve pre driving skills
  • Increase family, caregiver, friend involvement and participation in rehabilitation process
  • Increase patient to therapist ratios
  • Decrease length of recovery time, increase revenue, decrease cost
  • Offer opportunity to utilize versatile, low cost, off the shelf technology
  • Offer opportunity for ambient monitoring and SD card tracking

CHALLENGE

Online Auto Race and Fundraising Challenge Benefiting HANAFORD ADAPTIVE MOTORSPORTS & WELLNESS

Inspired by our nation's veterans, Accessible Racing's VXP Program is the FIRST and only virtual driver training and gaming system for people with extremity challenges including spinal cord injury and amputation.

The VXP driving simulator provides a way for disabled drivers to safely practice with modified controls in a virtual setting which seamlessly transitions to real world adaptive driving. The VXP Virtual Adaptive Driving Simulator was inspired by modifications made to Accessible Racing's NASCAR style race car, the first racecar driving experience for wounded warriors where they actually get to be in control and not just a passenger. The goal is to take the VXP from its current status of working prototype, to placement of working VXP Adaptive Driving Simulators into Veteran's Hospitals.

“For me, this piece crystallizes everything that makes racing, and sports in general, great,” said Burnett, who has been with SPEED for nearly two years. “Far away from the bright spotlight of a NASCAR race weekend, Accessible Racing (http://www.accessibleracing.com/) is using their passion for racing as a vehicle for inspiration and change. I felt that the sincerity and resolve of the veterans, particularly 1st Lt. Ian James Brown, would likewise inspire viewers and the judges."
Thank you Justin Burnett, and THANK YOU inspired Virtual World Challenge racers and sponsors!
